๐Ÿค– Robots & Smart Machines ๐Ÿค–

Read each idea together, then do the offline activity. No screens or AI chatbots needed โ€” just you and your child. Keep it playful.

1. Meet the Robot! ๐Ÿค– A Machine That Helps People

Have you seen a toy move on its own? ๐Ÿค– That is a little like a robot! A robot is a machine. People build machines to do jobs.

Do it together (offline):

Play 'Robot and Programmer' right now! One person is the robot. One person is the programmer. The programmer gives one instruction at a time โ€” like 'take two steps forward' or 'pick up the red block.' The robot must do ONLY exactly what is said, nothing more and nothing less. Switch roles and try again! See how much the robot needs the programmer to give very clear instructions.

2. How Robots Feel the World ๐Ÿค–

You have amazing senses! You see with your eyes. You hear with your ears. You feel things with your hands. ๐ŸŒŸ

Do it together (offline):

Close your eyes and have a grown-up gently place five mystery objects into your hands one at a time โ€” things like a spoon, a small toy, a sock, a smooth rock, or a crinkly piece of paper. Using only your sense of touch, try to guess what each one is! Then talk about it: what did your fingers notice that helped your brain figure it out?

3. Not All Robots Are the Same! ๐Ÿค–

Have you ever seen a music box? ๐ŸŽต You wind it up and it plays a song. It always plays the same song. It cannot learn a new one. It just follows one rule.

Do it together (offline):

Walk around your home and find five things that always do the exact same thing no matter what โ€” like a light switch, a toaster, or a wind-up clock. Write or draw each one on the left side of a piece of paper labeled "Same Every Time." On the right side, write or draw something you had to practice to get better at โ€” like catching a ball, drawing an animal, or learning a new song. Then talk about what makes the two sides feel different.

4. Helpers All Around Us! ๐Ÿค–๐Ÿ’›

Have you ever seen a helper at work? Maybe a librarian who finds your book. Maybe a crossing guard who keeps you safe. Helpers make life better for everyone! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Do it together (offline):

Go on a 'Helper Hunt' around your home or school. Walk slowly through each room and spot every tool or machine that helps someone do a job โ€” a kettle, a washing machine, a clock, a smoke alarm. Draw or list what you find. Then pick your favourite helper and talk about: Who made it? What one job does it do? Could it do a different job too?
